Halloween is right around the corner. But because the holiday falls on a Monday this year, many Oklahomans are unsure when they’re supposed to take their children trick-or-treating.

Tips for Handing Out Candy
Handing out candy to the neighborhood kids can be a great way to spend an evening.
- Wear gloves when passing out candy or consider using a kitchen utensil to help distribute them without hand contact.
- October is an unpredictable month when it comes to weather. No matter if it snows, freezes or if there are slippery leaves on the walkway — it’s your job to make a clear and safe path for trick-or-treaters.
- Traditionally, turning on the front light signals that you’ve got candy — so consider adding lights all the way to the door for safer passage.
- Also, be sure your family pets are safely tucked away for the evening — for their safety as well as that of your spooky guests.
- Replace all flames with electric candles for a safe, yet realistic effect.
- When it comes to treats, store bought is best.
- A teal pumpkin at your door lets others know you are handing out allergen-free treats.
- If you’re willing to try something new, go the healthy route and hand out little toys, trinkets, coloring books or crayons instead.
Trick-or-Treating Tips
Let’s take a look at some more helpful tips for staying safe while trick-or-treating.
- If the group is mainly little ones, then an adult should serve as chaperone.
- If the kids are old enough to go without an adult, make sure they follow a pre-planned route and stick to homes or neighborhoods you know.
- Stress the importance of crossing roads safely over and over again. Once those little goblins see treats across the street, the temptation to run is going to be huge.
Halloween Costume Safety Tips
The costumes are the best part of Halloween. But a poorly planned costume can actually be a health or safety hazard. Here are some costume safety tips to keep in mind:
- Check costumes to ensure that they’re flame retardant and that they allow for easy movement.
- Adding reflective tape, glow sticks and flashlights to the ensemble adds multiple layers of security.
- If your child will be wearing a costume mask, make sure it doesn’t block their breathing or vision. It may also be a good idea to check and make sure they can still wear a protective face mask comfortably underneath their costume mask.

This locally owned multipurpose center has been helping the area since 2016, providing youth programs and special events for holiday and back to school. This facility accepts donations for both food pantry as well as a clothing closet.

The Jesus house in OKC opened its doors in 1973 and has been providing those in need with food, shelter and clothing ever since. This facility is acceptnig clothes, food and small household items.

City Rescue Mission

The City Rescue Mission has been in OKC since opening a mens shelter for the transient population in the metro area in 1960. Their services have grown over the years and now incorporate a wide variety of partnerships to help them better serve those in need. This facility is accepting clothing, hygiene items, and baby formula.

A Story book themed fall festival in the lawn between Bethany Library and Bethany YMCA will be held featuring crafts, games, candy, and food trucks.

Haunt the OKC Zoo: Saturdays & Sundays in OCT
The Oklahoma City Zoo is celebrating its 39th year of Haunt the Zoo! Candy will be distributed at 13 candy locations by Zoo volunteers. Along the trail you’ll discover 20 themed booths, perfect for a unique photo opportunity! Zoo admission and official Haunt the Zoo bags are required to participate.

Neighborhood Watch Patrol is about neighbors partnering with the police to become trained observers and reporters in their neighborhoods.
Join OKC Police Departments’ Master Sergeant Dean Wyatt and the Neighborhood Alliance team to learn more about your neighborhood’s Neighborhood Watch and Neighborhood Watch Patrol programs.

Crime Patrol Volunteer- Harvest Hills South
Please let us know if you can spare a couple hours a week or month to help protect Harvest Hills South. We have people who can partner with you if needed. We have lost several patrollers due to illness and some have moved out of the neighborhood, so we really need your support. Let us know after you register and one of our patrollers will meet you there.

How can we all help
- Keep your outside lights on at night. Several streets are very dark and welcoming to crime.
- Make sure we have your contact phone numbers, so the patrollers can call you if you have your garage door open at night.
- Practice the 9pm rule. At 9pm, you check to make sure your garage and doors are closed and locked.
- Look at your neighbors across from you to see if theirs is closed too. If theirs are open, call and let them know.

The City of OKC Free Fishing Days Sept 4th
Local anglers can enjoy FREE fishing on the first Saturday of every month as part of our Free Fishing Days program. City permits are not required on the following days, but a State fishing license is still required.
Hooked on Fishing – Free Year-Round Fishing Classes
Learn fishing basics such as casting, knot tying, fish identification and angler ethics during one of the City’s “Hooked on Fishing” summer fishing classes.
Classes run in summer from 8am until 10am and in winter from 9am until 11am on select Saturdays and are for anglers ages 5 through 15. All participants must be accompanied by an adult.
Poles, tackle and bait are provided during the class. State Fishing License and City Permits are not required during class hours.
Classes are “catch and release” and fish will be returned to the water. FREE to the public. Visit okc.gov/parksignup to register in advance.
National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum
The sesquicentennial (150 years) of Yellowstone National Park is an opportunity to exhibit more of the National Cowboy Museum’s permanent art collection that focuses on the unique landforms and spaces in Yellowstone National Park and to inculcate in the visitor the importance of preserving these lands for public appreciation and enjoyment. OKC RIVERSPORT offers great kayaking experiences in Oklahoma City for both youth and adults. With RIVERSPORT you’ll have access to some of the best water in the OKC metro including downtown on the Oklahoma River, at Lake Overholser, and at Lake Hefner.
Kayaking is included in your day or season pass, or you can rent a kayak by the hour. Kayaks are available in the Boathouse District at the RIVERSPORT Adventure Park, at the Lake Overholser Boathouse, and at Hobie Point at Lake Hefner.
Whether you’re new to the sport or an experienced paddler, you’ll find lessons, programs and paddle experiences at all three locations to get you involved!

Neighborhood events are an opportunity for you, your neighbors and local businesses to forge relationships and build community. We would love to see everyone out making new friends!
Join us from 6pm-8pm for Live Music by local band Shades Of Gray while we play lawn games and Bingo on NW 79th. We will have local food trucks Coits Rootbeer and Hotdogs as well as Oklahoma Kettle Corn, who also serves lemonade. This is an all ages event that will have a bounce house and door prizes.
